Why Your Commercial Kitchen Should Have NSF Approved Equipment

Founded in 1944, NSF (short for National Sanitation Foundation)  is a non-for-profit organization that develops standards for food safety. When a product is NSF certified, this ensures that the product has been tested by one of the most important organizations in the food service industry. Through comprehensive testing & regulating, engineers &  health professionals have helped NSF develop more than 90 public health and safety standards, as well as 30 protocols for appliances and food equipment.

Therefore, any item or piece of equipment that has been tested features the NSF mark.

So, what does this mean for you?

  1. Having NSF-approved equipment means trust & satisfaction that you’re using the safest & most sanitary equipment possible. This is essential for any commercial kitchen. Poorly designed or malfunctioning equipment can lead to cross-contamination or even illness outbreak.
  2. Depending on your local health codes, certain equipment will most likely need to be NSF certified. Without the proper equipment, you could face violations & have to replace or remodel your kitchen to meet proper regulations. This means you could potentially lose customers and business! This is why it is important to check your local health regulations before equipping your commercial kitchen. Research is king!

At IMC/Teddy, we offer a wide variety of items & equipment that are NSF-certified. This includes floor troughs, hand & mop sinks, compartment sinks, wall cabinets, & more. Most importantly – by purchasing NSF-certified equipment you are promoting food safety throughout your business while meeting many health code requirements. 4. The NSF is one of the most important organization that develops standards for food safety. It ensures that whatever is NSF approved, it’s significance is seen as more legitimate. And anything that has been certified by them is seen as trusted. It’s very important and really without much being NSF certified it could be seen as not passing health violations

    1. Hi Brandon,

Well said. Having NSF approved equipment installed also gives your facility staff peace of mind that they are working with the safest & most sanitary equipment available.

  5. I have a new 3 compartment commercial 18 gauge stainless steel, NFS stamped and it has started rusting around the drain and inside one of the compartments 5 days after installation. I’m baffled, I’ve never seen nor would have expected this. I am contacting the supplier but do you have any insight on this issue

    1. Hi Tammy,

Thank you & what kind of environment is your compartment sink installed in? If the environment has high humidity & high salinity, this will speed up the corrosion process. Exposure to grease or other abrasives can also accelerate the process, but we’ve never heard of rusting after 5 days. Another possibility is that the sink is not constructed from type 300 series stainless steel, please confirm with your supplier. If you have any questions, please feel free to call us at (800) 221-5644.
